We’re honored to share that our Sun Villa Remodel – rekindling a legacy of affordable architecture has received a Special Mention in the Residential Remodel and Addition category of the 2025 Architizer A+Awards!

This project transforms a rare surviving Sun Villa designed by A. Quincy Jones—originally conceived in 1950 as a “good, contemporary, low-cost” model home—into a thoughtful, cost-conscious renovation for a contemporary family. Amid Southern California’s ongoing housing affordability crisis, the remodel demonstrates how design can sensitively respond to both economic and environmental realities. Central to the design intent, included reconfiguring the existing 970 sf layout to add a hallway and open up the rear yard, and a 160 sf courtyard studio—preserving the spatial ingenuity of the original while adapting it to modern needs.

We approached the remodel with a “light touch,” restoring Jones’ original material sensibility and spatial strategies, while removing incongruous additions. New elements were designed to preserve the home’s iconic post-and-beam character, indoor-outdoor trellises, and thin roofline—all while supporting a sustainable, affordable lifestyle.
