Map-à-Porter at Dwell on Design
Claret-Cup was invited by Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter, director of the WUHO gallery to be part of a pop-up exhibition at Dwell on Design 2014. The Design show took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center on June 20-22, 2014 and was the debut of our new project: Map-à-porter.
Map-à-porter means wearable map, portable urbanism, or neighborhood to go. It is a twist on the French term that describes a ready to wear garment and makes use of two interpretations of à -porter: to wear, and also to carry. Our maps are wearable objects that talk about the contemporary city as seen by architects and inhabitants.
Over 200 visitors shared their perspective on Los Angeles with us by making their marks on our map of Los Angeles neighborhoods with colorful dots representing historic, geographic or physcho-geographic features they identified with (or made up). Six people participated in our make-your-own Map-a-porter workshop and walked home with shoulder bags folded out of silk-screened Echo Park or de-bossed Hollywood neighborhood maps on leather. Most importantly though, we met a lot of great people that were interested in discussing LA, ideas, architecture and different approaches to influencing our built environment.
